Note from our Coaches regarding COVID-19

On March 6, 2020, Governor Holcomb declared a public health emergency in Indiana relating to the 2019 novel coronavirus (COVID-19); and on March 13, 2020, President Trump declared a national emergency relating to the virus.  The United States Center for Disease Control has determined that “social distancing” is necessary to minimize further spread of the virus.  In adherence to these directives, the Indiana Storm has postponed the start of the summer track and field season.  We remain optimistic that we will have a summer Storm season this year.  However, we must be mindful of the current pandemic we are facing.  For this given week, we urge our athletes and families to abide by the directives of the Governor and President.  Furthermore, the Surgeon General has advised the next two weeks will be imperative in how quickly we flatten the curve of this outbreak.

The Surgeon General has also recognized the importance of exercise to maintain one’s physical and mental fitness.  If you plan to have your athlete condition outside during this time, please find an open area and observe all “social distancing” directives.  There also numerous exercises that your athletes can perform in the home.  Soon, your coaches will send you weekly suggestions on workouts to stay in good physical condition.

In the next several weeks, your coaches will be monitoring developments with the COVID-19 virus and further directives of the Governor and President to assess a potential target date to commence the summer season.  Right now, USATF canceled its Junior Olympics because the University of North Florida extended its closure through the end of July.  USATF is working on an alternative site to host this event but that will probably be a daunting task to accomplish.  On April 30, 2020, USATF intends to make a decision on whether Youth Nationals currently scheduled for June 24-28, 2020 in Miramar, Florida will be cancelled.

With regard to the meets in which we participate earlier in our summer season, only the Dayton Wolverines meet on April 26, 2020 and the meet in Cincinnati have been cancelled.  The 14th Annual Mark Trail meet in Atlanta, Georgia is still on the schedule for May 22-24, 2020 as well as many others throughout the months of June and July.  While the Mark Trail meet has the potential of being cancelled, we will plan to operate as if the rest of these meets will move forward as scheduled.  We will keep you advised as scheduling developments occur.

St. John XXIII shared, “Consult not your fears but your hopes and dreams. Think not about your frustrations, but about your unfulfilled potential. Concern yourself not with what you tried and failed in, but with what is still possible for your to do.”

The coaches pray for the health, safety and welfare of our Indiana Storm families and we look forward to seeing you soon.
